Abstract

The famous Shigir collection of antiquities, gathered during late 19 — early 20 centuries in the course of gold mining at Shigir peat bog in modern Sverdlovsk region is one of the largest collections of ancient artefacts made from organic materials (wood, bone, antler) which are rarely preserved. First finds were made in 1879, and already in 1880 the first archaeological survey at Shigir peat bog was carried out by the archaeologist Mikhail Malakhov from Yekaterinburg. Collection from his surveys is now kept in MAE (Kunstkamera). It includes among other finds two outstanding bone and antler artefacts described in detail in the present article. The first is a straight dagger with slots with flint inserts. Such daggers were widespread in the forest zone of Northern Eurasia since late Paleolithic till early Neolithic. The second artefact is a shovel blade made from a split flat part of elk antler with the help of iron tools. These artefacts belong to different epochs, once more confirming non homogeneity of the Shigir collection.
